People will look at you funny if you have Rammstein's Du Hast coming out of your computer speakers. And no, it is not Nazi music.....at least I don't think so.
I remember someone telling me once that this had something to do with a repudiation or rejection of marriage vows or something like that. Now I've got to Google this.
Will you, until death is your sheath, be true to her for all time? Um. No. -------- I love Rammstein. I've translated several of their albums. The literal translations are more amusing (and perhaps more accurate) than those on their site.
Actually, as I understand it, there's a bit of a pun going on there: not only "you have me" but also "you hate me". Because, of course, you asked me that big question, and I said, "NEIN!"
Kinda. The lyrics are 'du hast' - you have, not 'du hasst' - you hate, where the double-s represents and estset that I'm too lazy to find the code for.
I dislike their english translation, which is you-you hate-you hate me-you hate me to say-and I did not obey. So, okay, it rhymes in english, but I think it loses more than it gained.
Some of the other songs on Sehnsucht... well, better for the american kiddies if they're not translated. My sister gave me quite a funny look when I asked her what geilheit was, since I didn't find it in my basic Langenscheidt's.
And here I thought they were just fond of puns, and meant us to hear both "du hast" and "du haßt". I mean, they turn the wedding vow:
Willst du bis der Tod euch scheidet treu ihr sein für alle Tage? Nein, nein! (will you be true to her for all days until death do you part? No, no!)
into what the boyfriend actually hears:
Willst du bis zum Tod der Scheide, sie lieben auch in schlechten Tagen? Nein, nein! (Will you love her on bad days too until the death of the vagina? No, no!)
No, it's not Nazi music, although since it -is- pyromaniac East German industrial death metal, there are a few neo-Nazi cults out there who like to squip Rammstein songs for the soundtracks of their YouTube videos and so on. They've also shown up in the CD collections of some high-profile teens-gone-postal, natürlich.
Wikipedia says they were suspected of "playing Master Race poster boys" because an album cover featured the members of the band being all topless and muscular. *shrug* Looks more lke "gay dance party poster boys" to me, but I don't live in Germany.
The article goes on to say they hate politics but have declared their left-wing leanings in at least one song. *shrug*
You You hate You hate me You have asked me You have asked me You have asked me And I have said nothing (or: "I have not answered")
I have Sehnsucht on a CD that todesschatten made for me as a "keep Kat awake on her crazy commute" anthology. I think there may actually have been one morning when "Du hast" saved my butt.
They are rather like gay dance party poster boys. Half the songs come across that way, too.
I ended up at Nazi german metal club show once. About halfway through the set, I realized that the local goths were up front, and the rest of the crowd were very scary skinheads from Chicago. Seemed like a good time to leave...
Funny, I recall it being Scheiden vice scheidet/Scheide. I'd check my dust jacket, but I think 'biter has had that cd for the better part of three years. *grumble*
Just because I can't touch doesn't mean I can't look ;)
(Apropos of nothing, tactisle, I always have a bit of a hard time looking at that icon because you look like you're agitated or angry or something like that....)
