LOngest: Probably something by Hugo or Dickens (Hardy didn't writie anything that long); maybe Les Miserables or Bleak House??
Shortest: Leaving kids books aside (Sorry Where the Wild Things Are and Dr Seuss) I would say Heart's Needle, a book of staggering work of heartbreaking poetry written by poet WD Snodgrass in the wake of his divorce and subsequent separation from his daughter.
