While I'm sitting here working I was thinking about how some songs end up taking on a connotation that has nothing to do with actual content or meaning of the song; a couple of examples.
The PFurs Pretty in Pink is associated with the Molly Ringwald movie from the 80s. Most people think of it as a peppy, cheerful song about the joys of being a teenage girl.
Um, not so much.
The song is, in reality, about a sad woman, who is popular with the boys for sex and not much else: she cares for her lovers more than they care for, or even notice, her. The lyrics even imply that some of her lovers don't even remember her name. Some interpretations of the song are that the lyrics are what people are saying and thinking while she's lying in her coffin after committing suicide; I can see that.
Don't believe me? Check out the lyrics under the cut below.
Perhaps the grandaddy of songs that get disconnected from their meaning is The Police hit, Every Breath You Take. Seriously, how many people reading this knew someone back in the 80s who claimed this as "their song". According to Wikipedia, "when asked why he appears angry in the music video" Sting told BBC Radio 2, 'I think the song is very, very sinister and ugly and people have misinterpreted it as being a gentle, little love song'". This is so much about unhealthy, obsessive love and stalking that the only phrase missing is, "If I can't have you no one can".
Again, the lyrics are behind a cut.
Can anyone think of any other songs that don't mean what (most) people think they mean????
