Crap, I Knew This Was Bound to Happen
Jan. 15th, 2012 09:17 pmSo I'm watching TV tonight and an ad for Sears comes on, hawking their Kenmore appliances and what do I here...."Save X% on whatever whatever at our Martin Luther Kind Day Event". Later I heard a commercial for KMart touting their Martin Luther King Day sale.
Well I guess it's official, corporate American has completed the process of making Martin Luther King a marketing tool. They've been getting there and it picked up when McDonalds began doing the commercials talking about his legacy and slapped their logo at the end. I know I shouldn't find this shocking or annoying, but I do.
In no small part because when they first passed the law creating this holiday, I voiced my misgivings that we would end up here and people got pissed at me. We already bastardized Washington and Lincoln's birthdays and have been using them to sell stuff for as long as I can remember. MLK, Jr wasn't even a president I'm surprised it took 25 years for the shameless shilling.
There are times when it sucks to be right.
