cinema_babeWelcome to St Valentine’s Day. To everyone on my LJ friend’s list I hope you had a nice one.
To the people with someone (or two or more) special, I hope you got to revel a bit in the *spirit* of the day as opposed to the crass consumerism that it’s become. There’s nothing wrong with designating a day to honor romantic love, finding that drop of tender sentimentality in one’s soul and letting it out for a day can be cathartic. The problem is when one equates the depth and seriousness of that love with a price tag.
To the people who don’t have a special person (yet) but want one, I hope that the light and warmth of the love of your friends will tide you over until there is someone warming the corners of your life. This time a year ago I was actually looking forward to taking a year or two of “alone time”, no relationships, just surveying the wreckage of my life and rebuilding. A month later I was sitting in a diner booth with a man who would change the landscape of my life. Not happily ever after, but pretty damn good. It’ll catch you unawares but you need to be out there in the right places for it to catch you.
To the people embarking on new relationships I say, “Me Too!” It’s by turns exciting and scary and a wondrous, wonderful thing. My wish for you is that your relationship will always have the sparkiness that it has today while it matures into something very beautiful and glowing.
To the people who have been together a while I offer my congratulations. When I grow up I want to be just like you. One day I want to wake up with a sheaf of memories in my fist and a joint future with someone in front of me. You all give me hope that just because I screwed up once I won’t end up alone with no one to lay daffodils and wild flowers on my weathered grave.
To the “Fuck Buddies” and “Friends with Benefits” of the world, keep up the excellent work. Sometimes to desire and be desired is the greatest tonic, medicine or anti depressant. Keep it honest and uncomplicated, help us feed the fire while we decompress from whatever it is we’re getting out of our system and we will do the same for you.
I wish you all love in its many forms: eros, agape, philia and all the ones I’m too lazy to look up on Google.
