I know I say this every year but this year I mean it....
I want to hit a lot of the movies being shown as part of the fall2008 New Jersey Film Festival. There are some really good movies scheduled including a very tasty looking Halloween double feature of Cabinet of Doctor Caligari *and* Creature from the Black Lagoon (the latter in 3-D!)
Now I don't *mind* going to these movies alone, and indeed I usually do, however, it would be nice to have some company; the more the company the merrier! I'll try to post about the individual movies in advance but feel free to let me know if there are any that you might be interested in going to.
The screenings are all on the Rutgers University campus in New Brunswick so it's easily accessible by mass transit.

Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson - Alex Gibney
From Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney comes a probing look into the uncanny life of journalist Hunter S. Thompson and the radically shifting eras—the late 60s to the 90s—that he channeled onto the pages of Rolling Stone . As Thompson is alternately shot up with sheer adrenalin, his own cocktail of every drug known to man, or shooting off his inimitable, speed-freak volley of words, this fast-moving, intensely entertaining documentary considers his ill-fated relationship with the biker gang, the Hell's Angels, his near-successful bid to become the sheriff of Aspen, the notoriously drug-infested road trip that became the basis of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas , his deep involvement in George McGovern's 1972 presidential campaign, and much more. From the director of Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room and Taxi to the Dark Side . Narrated by Johnny Depp. 2008; 120 min. Dreams That Money Can Buy - Hans Richter
The ultimate Dada/Surrealist cinematic experience. Dreams That Money Can Buy brings to life the dreams of seven people who find themselves in the office of a mind-reading psychiatrist. When he looks into their eyes he sees the reflected images of their unconscious worlds. These visions are then manifested on the screen, in saturated, surrealist Technicolor, and are based directly on the drawings, paintings, and scripts of six leading modern artists: Man Ray, Max Ernst, Alexander Calder, Ferdinand Leger, Marcel Duchamp, and Hans Richter. 1946; 80 min. Greetings from Asbury Park - Christina Eliopoulos
Will the wrecking balls soon descend on Asbury Park? In this timely new documentary, Christina Eliopoulos profiles a beach town, its citizens, and the vexing conflict between ruin and renewal. Angie is 91 and has lived through three decades of rust and riot in Asbury Park, the one-time paradise of the Jersey Shore. Now her tiny bungalow is threatened by eminent domain. In fact, 29 city blocks, 56 acres of waterfront property and historic boardwalk attractions now belong to a private developer and are slated to be razed and replaced by 3,100 luxury condominiums. City officials claim that a revitalized Asbury Park will be a thrilling combination of SoHo and South Beach. Meanwhile, the bulldozers are in Angie's backyard. A court case challenge is difficult and costly. This could be the last Indian summer that her beloved garden will be in bloom. 2008; 80 min. Back by popular demand ! With an in-person appearance by filmmaker Christina Eliopoulos on Fr-9/19!
Refusenik - Laura Bialis
What began as a small resistance movement led by Soviet Jews--who became known as the Refuseniks and boldly took on a Cold War superpower--grew into an international human rights crusade that engaged the disempowered and world leaders alike. In this expertly-woven new documentary, activists from both sides of the Iron Curtain, many of whom survived punishment in Soviet labor camps, relay their moving accounts of extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and ultimately, liberation. Interviews with key leaders in the resistance movement are combined with covert film footage that was smuggled out of the Soviet Union, to make Refusenik a unique and inspiring portrait of collective struggle. One of the proudest chapters in Jewish and world history, the story of the Refuseniks vividly demonstrates the power of solidarity against tyranny. 2008; 117 min.

L'Atalante – Jean Vigo
This intoxicatingly inventive masterpiece is a perennial entry on the best-film-of-all-time lists. Jean Vigo's innovative directorial style transforms the story of a young woman's stormy initiation into married life on a river barge into a kaleidoscope of dazzling digressions and tour-de-force scenes that still seem fresh and startling. When the young captain of the barge L'Atalante marries Juliette, a village girl who has never left home before, they sail away together into seeming bliss. However, along for the ride is an old salty dog named Pere Jules, played by Michel Simon in a legendary, uproarious, and unpredictable performance that forms the very heart of Vigo's magical, anarchic universe . 1934; 84 min.

Murder, Spies and Voting Lies* - Patty Sharaf
Will your vote be counted this November or not? How can you be certain if you vote on a computer whose software is owned by a private corporation and which leaves no paper record? These are not idle questions, as Murder, Spies, and Voting Lies reveals. This provocative and timely new documentary, which unrolls like a murder mystery but is all true, profiles the seamiest side of our democracy: the creation of vote-rigging software and the wholesale transfer of control over local, state, and national elections to the Republican-dominated Diebold Corporation. Before the debacle of the 2000 presidential election, Clint Curtis--a loyal Republican and computer programmer from Florida--was asked by Congressman Tom Feeney,
R (FL), to create a prototype for vote-rigging software for electronic voting machines. Once Curtis developed the software, he had a change of heart, and his exposure of the vote-rigging scandal developed into a murder mystery, when one of his colleagues turned up dead in a Georgia motel room. Curtis is joined by journalist-blogger Brad Friedman, fellow whistlebowers, Gore Vidal, and computer security experts, among others, to consider the implications of what happened in Florida on the future of our democratic system. 2008; 68 min. Chelsea Girls (Dual-Screen Projection)

Chelsea Girls (Dual-Screen Projection) – Andy Warhol
A rare dual-screen projection of Warhol's underground epic, Chelsea Girls , is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Starring Andy Warhol's legendary Factory entourage, including Nico, Ondine, Brigid Polk, Ingrid Superstar, Gerald Malanga, Marie Menkin, and Mary Woronov, the film was Warhol's first major commercial success, and was shot at the Hotel Chelsea and various other locations in New York City. Once principal photography wrapped, Warhol and co-director Paul Morrissey selected the twelve most striking vignettes and projected them side-by-side to create a visual juxtaposition of both contrasting images and divergent content (the so-called "white" or light and innocent aspects of life against the "black" or darker, more disturbing aspects). As a result, the actual 6 1/2 hour running time was cut in half, to 3 hours and 20 minutes. However, Warhol's concept for the film was that it would be unlike watching a regular movie, as the two projectors could never achieve exact synchronization from viewing to viewing; therefore, each viewing of the film is, in essence, an entirely different experience. 1966; 210 min. A New Jersey Premiere! Co-sponsored by the Rutgers University Zimmerli Art Museum.

Friday 10/10 Beauty #2 + Inner and Outer Space Scott 123-7PM
Beauty #2+– Andy Warhol
Edie Sedgwick was downtown New York's "It girl" of 1965, when she was inseparable from Andy Warhol; they briefly reigned together as the king of Pop Art and his star. Sedgwick appeared in nearly all of Warhol's films that year. In “Beauty #2,” her most playful and alluring performance, Sedgwick flirts in bed with a half-naked man—and the camera—while responding to jealous insults from an off-screen voyeur. "Edie was incredible on camera—just the way she moved," said Warhol. "She was all energy. She didn't know what to do with it when it came to living her life, but it was wonderful to film."1965, 70 min. A New Jersey Premiere!
Outer and Inner Space (Dual-Screen Projection) + – Andy Warhol
This split-screen extravaganza will be shown, as Warhol intended, in dual-screen projection. Seated next to her own image on a television monitor, Edie Sedgwick free associates about subjects that include outer space, medication, and her family. In this innovative merging of two visual mediums, film and television, the movie screen doubles as both a vanity mirror and a confession booth. 1965, 70 min. Co-sponsored by the Rutgers University Zimmerli Art Museum. A New Jersey Premiere!

Cabinet of Doctor Caligari – Robert Weine
A milestone of the silent film era, this eerie German classic from 1920 remains the most prominent example of German expressionism in the emerging art of the cinema. Stylistically, the look of the film's painted sets--distorted perspectives, sharp angles, twisted architecture--was designed to reflect the splintered psychology of Dr Caligari, a sinister figure who uses a sleepwalker to commit murder. With its mad-doctor scenario, striking visuals, and a haunting, zombie-like character at its center, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari was one of the first horror films to reach an international audience, sending shock waves through artistic circles and serving as a strong influence on the classic horror films of the 1920s, '30s, and beyond. 1920; 71 min.

Saturday 11/8 RFK + The Death of Andy Kaufman Scott 123-7PM
RFK* – Mark Sobel
This first feature film documentary about the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy in 1968, and the subsequent trial of Sirhan Sirhan for the murder, is a detailed and controversial account that begins with the fateful night of June 4, 1968 and follows the developments in the case over the next four decades. As fascinating as it is disturbing, this film includes interviews with numerous eyewitnesses and others who have maintained their silence for almost 40 years, and who are at long last willing to come forward and disclose facts about the case that have been kept from the public. Not a film that takes sides with any specific theories, RFK is an in-depth account of the assassination and its aftermath--documenting the failures in the original investigation of the crime that have left many bizarre and puzzling unanswered questions. 2008; 90 min. Co-sponsored by the Rutgers University American Studies Department! A New Jersey Premiere!
The Death of Andy Kaufman – Christopher Maloney
Andy Kaufman, often erroneously cited as a comedian, was the world's first performance artist. He defied genre and categorization to become a true artistic pioneer. Given the absence of separation between his life and his performances, the news of his terminal illness in 1984 was treated by many as another of his practical jokes. Then, upon his death from lung cancer months later, the questions and incredulity continued. Now, over twenty years later, his death is still not considered to be an undisputed reality. Many continue to wonder if Andy is alive... and if he is, what is he doing? What does he look like? Will he return to the spotlight? These are the questions explored in depth by this documentary. 2008; 80 min. A New Jersey Premiere!
