A Tale of Two Hambugers
Aug. 27th, 2009 07:54 pmAbout a month ago, I was visiting the lovely
klytus down in the DC area. He took me to a place called, Five Guys Burgers and Fries. This is a small chain that began in the Arlington, Va in the mid 80s. I was thrilled to discover that they have expanded as far north as Jersey and there are stores in Edison (In the Pathmark strip mall on Rt 1) and Lake Hiawatha, NJ.
I can sate my burger lust whenever I want.
The burger is a yummy double burger that came with the fixings I requested. Despite the burger being cooked all the way through, it was juicy, meaty and hot.
And the fries are cooked in peanut oil and are addictive. IF you told me they were make with crack, I wouldn't be surprised. The only drawback is that the portions are so *huge* that I can't finish a whole burger and a regular size fry; it's just too much food. (That's why when I go, I usually get the junior size burger with only one beef patty.)
This place is what McDonald's dreams of being when it grows up.
There there's Blitzburger's Grill and Cafe. They're located in the Olde Queens Tavern right off of Easton Ave in New Brunswick. A co-worker recommended it to me so, burger whore that I am, I trundled off to try it yesterday.
What a let down.
Their standard burger is also a big double patty, 5 oz each compared to Five Guys' 4 oz meaty buddy. Whereas the Five Guys' burger is juicy despite being cooked to well done, the Blitzburger was compacted, dry, flavorless and tough. If seemed as though the cook might have pressed the meat down to get it cook faster (and squeezing all of the tasty meat juices out. (WHAT A TRAVESTY!)
The fries were good and the cole slaw was excellent but their marquee item did not even meet the level of mediocre. Will I go back here? I don't know. I believe in giving place 2 or 3 chances before writing them off altogether. But it won't be anytime soon.
