Hitler Parody Goes Meta On Us

In case you have been in a cave for the past couple of years, there has been a meme going around our tube that features a clip from the German movie Downfall. The parodies feature a clip from the movie where Hitler, in his bunker near the end of the war, proceeds to flip out and basically lose his shit. Since the film is in German the scene is subtitled and some enterprising YouTubers replaced the original subtitles with their own. Hilter has gotten upset about Emos Kids, Hippies, republicans, Real Estate, Christmas, The Transformers movie and The Mets. There are probably a couple hundred of these if not more.

It seems the producers of this movie, largely unknown in this country prior to the meme, are not happy about this and are calling copyright infringement. They sent a request to YouTube asking them to take these down and YouTube complied.

In this final clip, Hitler bemoans the deletion of the parodies.

Well, I was all up in arms about the take down: as in WTF are they doing that for, but I can certainly see it now: first they got an order of magnitude more publicity for their movie with this meme; now they've gone and boosted their publicity by another order of magnitude.

If they're smart, they'll keep it up for a while and then let it drop.
