Reason #668 Why I Hate the Media
May. 18th, 2011 07:53 amOkay, so Arnold Schwarzenegger has confessed to not only having an affair but also to fathering a child during the course of the affair. Not completely surprising since he had a reputation for running around with women. I suspect that he went public with this because a threat from tabloid (or tabloid like) media outlet (which, for the record, I think it sucks when someone feels compelled to reveal details of their private life for public consumption).
I tend to think this sort of thing is private and that the media should stay out of what is essentially a family issue. However, if you are in public life of any kind, you live under a microscope. You will be followed by cameras and if you are doing something notable (a movie, a run for office) you may be hounded a bit more than usual
So why am I pissy?
Because this morning, NBC News, turning to TMZ as the source, published a picture of the woman who was Arnold's lover and a boy they identified as possible being the child (or as they called him "love child") from that affair.
Just yuk.
You can argue whether, by her affair, this woman made herself a public figure, I tend to think not. However, she is a mother and her face and name have been publicized. Anyone who recognizes her face will easily be able to link her to her son. Now everyone in his school and neighborhood will know (or think they know) about his paternity. *And* they used an archaic, highly judgmental term to refer to a child who had the misfortune to born as the result of an affair.
Along similar lines the woman who accuse the head of the IMF of sexually assaulting her is in hiding because the media was crowding around her home and she was embarrassed and afraid. Moreover, they perpetuated some ugly gossip that she was living in an living facility for people with AIDS.
Way to go respectable news outlets. Fuck them, fuck them all.
