Thee are songs that herald the coming of Advent and the Holiday Season to me but my favorite carol is probably the French carol Bring the Torch, Jeannette Isabella.

I find a that I have a tough time to find a version of this song that I like because too many people either slow it down and make too solemn, or they sing the words too staccato for my tastes. This is supposed to be a legato adante . It's a dance; Jeannette and Isabella are being called to the stable to see the Christ child. It's neither a meditation nor is it a march.
(I've always like to think the real story of this song is that it's the Innkeeper's Wife calling her daughters or servant girls to help her play midwife. I mean a woman's giving birth, and for the first time no less? You know there had to be some women there helping her and one of them was most likely the Innkeeper's wife.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
