So a few months ago, I had a list of 6 schools I was applying to for my PhD. I got into most of them and then I had to make a choice about where to go. It got down to two school and I picked one at the end of last week. I had to let the schools know first but now I can let everyone else in:

In September I begin school at Purdue University in Indiana. The program is top notch, #8 in the country, and area seems nice enough. Even though it's not New Jersey it seems like a decent place to spend the next few years. There are a few people who came from Rutgers there already so I won't be too homesick.

Today I am feeling slightly overwhelmed (okay, more than slightly overwhelmed) as I realize I have no idea what to do to relocate 800+ miles away, I guess I need to start by selling or giving away most all my shit. The only pieces of furniture I want to bring with me are my bed and my dresser, both of which I am deeply sentimentally attached to. Of course my books, clothes and dishes. I need to get rid of the stuff left in my storage (which is not much) and I want to sell my wedding dress (which is a glorious dress for any large bride. If you know someone, let me know).

I needs a crap load of money I don't have so this should be interesting. The picture below is the silent scream I'm making at this moment.

Sick Face

Cool, you've decided. So ummm, maybe I could take that dress off your hands if we were able to talk a mutual friend of ours into taking that big step himself.... hahahahaa. (I know I know, pipe dreams, I work for a plumber, that's all I've got)

Congrats on your choice, mighty fine school and tasty chicken as well.....

I'm asking an obscene amount for it (I paid $1,000, I want $750) but if it's for you all, I'll give it to you as a gift.

It's a big dress, and you would need to have it shortened but I think it would look marvelous on you; very regal.

That's not a bad price really, but considering who I'd need to convince it would be easier for me to try and to grow six inches in height than to convince him to marry his rapidly aging girlfriend. I figure I'll be able to get the AARP rate on wedding gowns at the rate I'm going. Put it on esty?

Well you can always make all the arrangements and then tase him the morning of. (Um, just kidding)

I'm never sure just what you can and can't sell on esty. I might try EBay but I don't think I'll get the price I want and the darn dress is pristine. I wore it once and then had it cleaned and boxed.

I'm pretty sure I've bought used clothing from Etsy.

On Ebay you can always set a reserve price higher than the opening bid and then not sell it if they don't meet your price.

congratulations and best of luck for your new course. much sympathy-arg! for the move.

i'd suggest sorting out a room at a time (or equivalent) - it definitely saved my sanity, and i was only moving an hour away!

Congratulations on Purdue! It must feel amazing to know where you're going to go, and especially since it's such a good program.

Indiana should be a nice place to spend a few years, especially since you aren't dependent on the buzz of urban concentration like I am.

Thank you.

I'm a stone cold Jersey Girl. it will be very hard to be away from the ocean (note to Midwesterners: The Great Lakes are not the ocean, get over it. That's not a beach, it's a lakeside). IT's also hella flat there, I mean *really* flat. But the area seems to be nice and it's college town and they are pretty similar no matter where you go.

But it's a great program, the people I met, both faculty and staff, were the kind of people I can work well with so I know I can do my time there.

I've always been lurking... but since you might now be moving away, I felt the need to chime in and actually *say* something :)

Yeah, I've been a student I know all about the funding thing. The nice thing about a PhD is they pretty much pay you to get the degree because you get paid to teach and do research.

I don't know where I will end up afterward, you go where the job is. I don't need the stuff, I should sell/give it away to people who will enjoy and use the stuff like I sis. I'd rather put the money toward living expenses and going to conferences as opposed to putting it in a storage I can't keep an eye on.

Less Stuff = Less Worries

A new adventure for you to thrive in. From what I've seen of you in the last 10 years, you're almost certain to thrive, but it won't always ferl like you are.
