I had an epiphany about Doctor Who: there are definitely parallels between my favorite Doctor (#5, Peter Davidson) and #11 (MAtt Smith).

The were both, up until that point, the youngest man to play the role. In each case this was not without a certain level of controversy as people questioned whether an actor so young could embody a character played by men who a good decade older. Could they be appropriately authoritative, seem realistic as a sentient being who has lived for over 800 years?

They both also had to follow a long lived and wildly popular incarnation, Davidson followed Tom Baker who still holds the record for playing The Doctor the longer than any other actor (7 years IIRC). His super long striped scarf become so iconic that in abstract representations, that scarf is all you need to know it's him.

Smith had to follow perhaps the most popular Doctor ever, #10. For many people David Tennant *is* The Doctor. His final episode was the highest rated episode of Doctor Who of all time.

And yet, I think they both have acquitted themselves very well. More than well.

Just a random thought from my caffeine deprived brain.

4 will always be the best. 10 will always be second best.

11 is almost as good as 10, but the last year has been really weak, story-wise.

I never liked #4, much too hammy, mugging it up all the time. Something about #5 was classy. I'd trust him if I was stuck at the end of the universe before I could truets #4. I like #10 but I *hate* all of that nonsense with Rose. I *hate* Rose. If The Doctor was going to fall in love it would not be with anyone as tacky and useless as her.

10 just got too angsty for me, I felt like shit became melodrama that last season and a half. Blech. That being said I did like him.

I love Rose. Ive never heard a man say he hates her. (Except maybe a gay man would).

Maybe its a guy thing.

To me 4 is the ultimate Who. Smart, saves the day, but still weird & alien. If you told me out of the 11 actors, one was a REAL alien, he'd be my first (and only) guess.

Yes, although I found 4 had enough gong for him for me to be neutral+ despite those faults, those faults made him quite worse than 3.

#3 and #6 were both considered to be duds

By whom? Of the folks whom I knew watching it in the early 1980s (seeing 1-6, mostly 3-6) 4 was the favorite, but 3 was runner-up. Pertwee had the whimsy that TB had after him, but his cockiness, while there, wasn't so outlandish that you doubted his grip on reality.

11 tries hard to be weird, but noone is as naturally weird as 4.
