Had a wonderful time hanging out with friends on Saturday and topic of "1939 as the most notable year in American movie history" came up. We discussed the cinema of the early to mid 70s but it seems that the films of that Golden Age were spread out over several years.

I tripped over to IMDB today to see just how many notable films came out in 1939 and the astounding number I came up with was 37. I don't know if any other one year compares. I put the list under a cut.

I'm thinking that this might make an interesting movie festival.
